The LED Cinema Display 24-inch Apple monitor is the first that the house in Cupertino designs specifically for use with their laptops. The appearance is almost identical to an iMac with the same diagonal, the only differences are that the Cinema Display is a couple inches thinner and has less edge on the bottom.

The monitor has the DisplayPort as the only video input, which makes the equally revolutionary new monitor (for your behavior) of its direct predecessor. It is so long (about four years) since Apple has presented its latest desktop monitors was the Cinema HD Display 30-inch, which debuted in June 2004. That model was the abandonment of the proprietary Apple Display Connector (ADC) to the DVI standard, the LED Cinema Display marks the abandonment of the DVI for the adoption of the Mini DisplayPort, which is set to become an official standard VESA.apple-led-cinema-display

The fact is that at the time of writing the only computer that can connect natively with the LED Cinema Display is the MacBook and MacBook Pro unibody and the latest version of the MacBook Air. For now it is a display dedicated to a limited audience. Moreover, the new LED Cinema Display is built-in LED backlighting, the ability to power a laptop through a cable with MagSafe connector, the integration of a hub with three USB 2.0 ports.

Integrated into the LED Cinema Display are the usual iSight camera, microphone and a new audio system speakers. Two speakers at the bottom of the display dealing with medium and high tones, while a third carries the bass and it’s on the back: the sound bounces on the pedestal of the monitor and thus reaches those who are in front of the screen. The audio quality we’ve found is obviously better than the speakers on a laptop, but it is less than that of an iMac.

The specifications of the screen are in the middle of the LCD monitor 24 inches, in particular, the LED Cinema Display has a 1000:1 contrast, a viewing angle of 178 degrees and a response time of 14 milliseconds. There was a particularly glossy screen, which should be carefully considered if they are assessing the use at work.

The color rendition is very good, especially is constant even with changing the angle of view and along the surface of the panel (when excluding the extreme sides and angles). It is also a matter of taste, but to us the LED Cinema Display has appeared a little ‘cold and sovrailluminato in its standard configuration. Therefore we also seemed more balanced after a proper calibration.

In Conclusion

The new LED Cinema Display we note two major flaws, both related to the configuration possibilities: the definition of any parameter of the monitor should be done from System Preferences, because the LED Cinema Display has no buttons or menu on-screen, of panel you can change only the inclination, the height and not least of the orientation (portrait / landscape). Fair enough attention to design, but the possibility to vary the height of the screen is something we consider important. Other than that the monitor there seems to have all the characteristics to be successful among users of the new unibody laptops, provided that for us its kind “glare” it promotes consumer applications (see photos, films …) and the disadvantage in those professions.
